Most Fantastic 2011
Nu’alolo Kai, Nā Pali, Kaua’i
Nāwa’a and I have been blessed with an amazing 2011, especially because of the many new, and longtime, friends and family along the way. We have been fortunate to spend time with them in these many beautiful places:
- Kōke'e, Hā'ena, Nu'alolo Kai, Wailua, and Po‘ipū, Kaua'i,
- O'ahu and Maui,
- Pape'ete, Tahiti,
- Mo'orea,
- Tiputa, Au Secteur, et Lagon Vert de Rangiroa,
- Fakarava,
- Marquesas Archipelago (Nuku Hiva, Ua Pou, Hiva Oa, Tahuata, Fatu Hiva, and Ua Huka)
- Arizona
- Las Vegas, Nevada
Below is a slide show of nearly 300 (out of more than 15,000+) photos Nāwa'a and I shot this past year. Most, but not all, of these photos are on this blog site already.
A Glimpse of a Most Fantastic 2011
This year, 2012, is already busy here at our little island home. Nawa'a continues to work on his Kaneiolouma research, serving on various historic preservation commissions/councils, working on the kahua, and helping a friend with his lo'i kalo once in a while.
I've been working on a couple of faunal collections, having fun playing with a good g'friend and her son visiting from Tahiti, serving on a couple of councils/boards, as well as starting to refine/translate (from English to French! Yikes!) three PowerPoint presentations for my Marquesas lectures scheduled again this June on the Aranui 3.
We're also looking forward to taking care of another season, as well as stepping back into another era, of the ancient Hawaiian coastal village of Nu'alolo Kai (here on our island of Kaua'i) with our incredible Na Pali Coast 'Ohana SWAT and Pohaku Team this spring/summer. Our "rehabilitation" teams are scheduled for May and August. NPCO's Po'o Sabra Kauka's native botanical restoration team will go in during different trips (amazing what's going on here!). Our Native Hawaiian plants are beginning to settle into our fenced nursery quite nicely - now if we could just get rid of the many hungry goats! Meanwhile, Nu'alolo Kai is patiently waiting...

I also have a couple of other trips planned this year to Miloli'i valley again here on the Na Pali Coast - one working again with the Hawaii Youth Conservation Corps (with Alan Carpenter of Hawai'i State Parks, and wonderful fun friend and photographer Tim DelaVega) in July, and another archaeological expedition (with Jenny Kahn of Bishop Museum and Alan Carpenter of Hawai'i State Parks) currently scheduled for the month of September.
